Mothers' Day History

As with so many of the holidays printed on our calendars, the history of Mother’s Day has been mostly forgotten.  Julia Ward Howe, best known as the author of “The Battle Hymn of the Republic,” was also the founder of Mother’s Day.  As we celebrate it now, Mother’s Day is mostly a boon to greeting card companies, florists, and restaurants serving a champagne brunch.  But Julia Ward Howe envisioned Mother’s Day rather differently, as a solemn day for women from all over the world to meet and discuss the pursuit of world peace.  Why, she reasoned, should mothers send their sons to kill the sons of other mothers.
